So just a few days and one year after I posted this Appendix (#2) to my Introduction post, I just want to add for anyone reading it that 1 - OSES is now called The Techne System for Foundational Skills (or just Techne for short), and 2 - is available online right now, completely free with no subscriptions or sign-ups: https://techne-system.neocities.org

It's still in an early development phase (version 0.4), but there is plenty of useful material there, over 35 lessons covering 23 topics, and more being added all the time. So take a look and see how it might help improve your life!

I've also created an alt profile where you can keep up with changes and also ask questions, or talk about anything related to the program: https://mindly.social/@hephaestus

And remember that Techne is meant to be an evolving system, so I'm happy to accept any constructive feedback or even contributions if you have anything that could benefit the program. Not only text, but pictures, diagrams, videos, audio readings, whatever can help people to learn the material. Become part of the Techne community!

Version 0.4 of Techne is here! The completion of all the Level 1 topics to Intermediate depth marks a new milestone in the development of the Program for Foundational Skills with lots of great new content.

Topic 4, Internal Barriers now includes a deeper look at the Social Model of Disability, what happens when barriers become part of your identify, the difference between shame and guilt, how barriers interact, invisible barriers, as well as a look at trauma as a barrier.

Topic 5, External Barriers covers important subjects such as intersectionality and privilege, a comparison of structural and individual barriers, how barriers cluster, and the hidden costs of barriers. Also offered are several case studies of communities that pushed back against their barriers, as well a look at the full picture of the relationship between internal and external barriers.

And as usual each lesson contains practice exercises to help develop your understanding of the material, how these topics connect to others in the program, as well as key sources and further reading for those that want to delve even deeper into the concepts covered.

You can check out the new lessons now!

Encyclical Letter of His Holiness Leo XIV Magnifica Humanitas (15 May 2026)

ENCYCLICAL LETTER MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS OF HIS HOLINESS POPE LEO XIV ON SAFEGUARDING THE HUMAN PERSON IN THE TIME OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE [ Multimedia ] ___________________________

Like I did with the Science topic, I've stepped out of the normal development progression to work on the Intermediate level material for the Level 2 topic of Technology and Society. The main reason for this is because of the subject of artificial intelligence and large language models.

This technology has been deployed faster than any in history, much faster than people have had time to really learn much about it. Despite that, it has also been made highly available to a huge number of people, making an alarming gap between a technology's use and people's understanding of it. So for that reason, I added this little primer of the subject for anyone interested in what AI/LLMs are, how they work, what they can and can't do, the ethical considerations of their use and deployment, as well as how to use them effectively should you decide to. I also hope that it will provide a better basis for people discussing the topic, as well as those who want to get involved with public policy decisions regarding it.

Also included in Technology and Society Intermediate are the subjects of automation, open source (both software and other things), as well as a more general but important look at humanity's relationship and dependence on technology.

As usual, any (friendly) feedback is welcome, it's how the program improves.

Two more Intermediate level lessons in Level 1, bringing us half way to version 0.4. Both Topic 2: What Is Human Potential? and Topic 3: What Are People Capable Of? now have much more in-depth material for those who want more than just the Bare Essentials.

I thought that these topics might end up rather dry, but they turned out more interesting and useful than I expected. In them we learn more about the breadth of human potential in different domains, what contributes to achievement, and a greater look at the role that barriers play in limiting that achievement. In Topic 3, we get many more great examples of people overcoming their barriers, and the things that contributed to them doing so.

So be sure to check them out: https://techne-system.neocities.org
(If you've been to the web page before and can't find the new lessons, try refreshing the page, or flushing your browser's cache.)
As always, we are interested in your feedback!

@loweringthebar
I think that no one should touch AI/LLMs without some kind of training or education on how they work, what they can and can't do, considering the ethics of their use, and using them responsibly if you do decide to use them. That's why I'm making such a primer right now as part of the Techne System for Foundational Skills in the Technology and Society topic. Here are some relevant excerpts from the draft so far:

"Professional and career disasters

The pitfall: Using AI for professional work without adequate oversight, verification, or disclosure.

Why it happens: AI promises efficiency and polish. In professional contexts with tight deadlines, the temptation to let AI handle work is strong."

"Legal work: Lawyers have submitted legal briefs containing AI-generated case citations that don't exist. Courts have sanctioned lawyers for this. Hallucinated legal citations can get you disbarred."

"How to avoid it:

- Never submit AI-generated work without thorough review and verification
- Verify every factual claim, citation, statistic, and technical detail
- Understand what you're submitting—if you can't explain it or defend it, don't put your name on it
- Follow professional standards and disclosure requirements in your field
- Maintain accountability—you're responsible for everything you submit, regardless of how it was created

Your reputation is built over years and can be destroyed in moments. AI-assisted work requires the same standards as any other work bearing your name."

Hopefully the completed lesson will be ready and available sometime this week.

**Big changes for Techne!**

First of all is mostly behind the scenes, but I have started using a program called Hugo (https://gohugo.io) for making the website, which will speed up my workflow. Not only that, but Hugo comes with themes that offer many features, including layouts that I can only dream of, built-in search function, menus, charts by code, etc. I'm really excited about it, and the whole site has a fresh new look as well. Be sure to check it out and let me know what you think!

There is also some new content as we progress towards version 0.4. Level 1, Topic 1: How to Use This Program now has an Intermediate level lesson, giving more advice on using Techne, making it easier, and making options clearer.

Science (Level 2, Topic 5) also got the Intermediate treatment (a bit out of sequence, but I was inspired), with not only more to learn about science itself, but full lessons on Chaos Theory, Evolution, and Ecology. So why these subjects then? They do all relate to many of the other topics in the program, and having a basic understanding of them does have benefits for your life too. If you want any more convincing, just check out the Why These Topics in the first lesson's introduction, or Why This Matters in each subject, just like with every topic in the program.

The Techne System for Foundational Skills

Announcement: Version 0.3 is complete and now available online here: https://techne-system.neocities.org 🎉
This may not sound like an impressive number, but it means that all 23 topics are now complete at the Bare Essentials level, making the program fully usable at this level. So feel free to give it a look and maybe a try. It's all free and there's no obligations whatsoever. I do however appreciate any (constructive) feedback. Let me know what you like, dislike, what works for you, what doesn't. This is meant to be an evolving system, always looking for opportunities to improve so that it works better for more people. I hope to hear from you!
