• As this is a more fitting term to differenciate between "us" #TechLiterates (who know how to setup some lightweight #Linux distro and make it work (not just for us bot others) and those who believe the #Enshittification, #bloat and crap is "a fact of life" (aka. "#TechIlliterates")…
  • Just like #literacy enables people to learn, interact and communicate, the same applies to using #technology and #media (see "#MediaLiteracy")…

Thus I see it as both moral and social duty to spread "Tech-Literacy" among society because decades of #illiteracy in #tech are now paying dividends and #Cyberfascists actively work on sabotaging and destroying #HumanRights and #CivilRights under #FalsePretenses lile "#YouthProtection" (see "#AgeVerification")…

• In many cases people get forced to use garbage under threat of getting fired.
  • It's not as if the average office worker get to choose their employer's #TechStack!
• #Proprietary Silos are rapant and prevent #Interoperability and #Decentralization due to #aaS-based #Enshittification.

As for the rest, it's lazyness, #TechIlliteracy and/or #inaccessinility of alternatives stopping them!

@beka_valentine I think it's mostly due to fostering #TechIlliteracy instead of teaching #TechLiteracy with a caste of #LadderPullers working to enshure less people, espechally marginalized ones, pursue #ComputerSciences or even #IT in general.

• Add to that the unwillingness - similar to trades - to offer #traineeships (and not merely exploit people as #interns at below - poverty line pay) and you get a rising group of informal #TechWorkers that then try to fill the ureasonable demand.

  • Corporations constantly complain they need more #professionals whilst being explicitly unwilling to train #talent inhouse is IMHO self-inflicted #BrainDrain, as those that ain't stupid seize the opportunity and negotiate in that climate to a better position, if not start #freelancing as that gives them more control on what jobs to pursue.

@marxistvegan I don't dismiss the problem but I also think we should stop accepting #TechIlliteracy and ignorance as cop-outs.

• People gonna learn shit then! If they can spend hours micro-optimizing their Browser or wasting it on fragile hacks to deshittify Windows, then they can also have the patience of 5-15 minutes for some hands-on setup.

I'm not even asking #TechIlliterates to go to a #CryptoParty or use #Tails, but merely following step-by-step guides for easy-to-use and -setup options like #DeltaChat & #Thunderbird and/or #monoclesChat & #gajim respectably.
