Researchers uncover 10 new moth species and 7 new genera in Hawaiʻi

"Among the discoveries is Paalua leleole, a species in which the female moths appear unable to fly. Several of the new moths were named to honor Hawai’ian culture, including Iliahia lilinoe, named for Lilinoe, the goddess of mists on the Haleakalā volcano, on the island of Maui."

Eyed Hawk-moths are among our biggest moths. When its forewings are covering its hindwings, the head with its dark markings might ward off a predator, because it looks like a furry face staring back, but if that doesn't work, then it flashes the ocelli (false eyes) on its hindwings and that often does the trick. #pareidolia

Another cocktail for another new moth I had this year. The moth was the Dark Seedhead Moth, Apodia martinii, so the drink is:

Apodia Martini

40ml gin
10ml Pedro Ximenez sherry
dash of black walnut bitters
twist of orange

This was a good one. Quite complex and sophisticated, almost chocolatey; the sweet sherry, walnut and orange combo is quite Christmassy.

Incidentally, the reason it doesn't have fresh orange peel as a garnish is that I got fed up with semi-peeled oranges drying up in the fridge, so I put some orange extract in a spritz bottle instead. It works fine.
