🚀 The core developers of #TDF are ejected, and the article goes on a magical mystery tour of Michael Meeks' inactivity log 📜—a thrilling read, only rivaled by unraveling Wittgenstein's net. Who wouldn't want to sift through decades of archived #LibreOffice tea? ☕📚

Say hello to Neil Roberts, new LibreOffice developer focusing on scripting support - TDF Community Blog

The Document Foundation, the non-profit entity behind LibreOffice, has a new developer in its team. Neil Roberts started work this month and will initially focus on LibreOffice’s scripting support. Let’s hear from him… Tell us a bit about yourself! I’m from the UK but I escaped to France after the Brexit vote and I’ve been living here in Lyon ever since. I got into programming when I was little, mostly by programming in BASIC on an Amstrad CPC. At the time I thought it was cool that you could sometimes see the source code in BASIC of software that you bought on cassette tape. Later my older brother got me into Linux and I loved that you could see the source code of absolutely everything. I’ve been a big fan ever since, and I always have some programming side project on the go. I started my career at a small open source consultancy working on Clutter – which at the time was a project meant to bring revolutionary animated user interfaces inspired by the iPhone into the GNOME space. It is still used inside GNOME Shell today. Eventually that small consultancy got acquired by Intel where I moved onto working

When the usually affable and engaging Michael Meeks writes a blogpost (link btw is https://www.collaboraonline.com/blog/tdf-ejects-its-core-developers/) , and I find a woolly and non-specific answer from @tdforg but on their software channel @libreoffice I am first of all glad there is a blog post by you. That's good! I ám bemused it's on a software account instead of a foundation account, but most of all: The blog post isn't a great look imo, it's woolly, doesn't address if there has been proper communication, and most of all, I find it makes light of developers' years-long commitment to a complicated codebase. Nice that "you're hiring", what's next, vibecoding by new devs? I don't sense any effort to keep people together to make #LibreOffice be even better. I think it's been a missed opportunity by #TDF, especially with Euro-Office on the horizon. I wish you good luck hopefully patching things up with Collabora (which I don't use but tend to follow because they are good at communication and outreach.)

🫠 TDF ejects its core developers over commercial conflicts around "opensource" offerings.

If you take openhubs contributor page and look for the top 20 contributors[1]
-- you will find only _two_ that are allowed to take part in its governance[2] (and those happen to already get a salary from the foundation for their work).

So, if you think use of your #donation to #TDF will be decided on by a "sustainable, independent and meritocratic community" that as of now suggests a fail on all three counts.
