Not sure where Alan got the Capt. Hope from, but I was able to find the actual guy and his history. The "H" was not for "Hope." It was for "Hop."

Hippy Hop was a college football player who became popular among young athletes for wearing bunny ears on the field. Hippy claimed that the ears made him feel more like a bunny, consequently he believed he could run faster by kinda hopping a bit. Seems it worked as Hippy was the leading scorer in 1943.

I rediscovered this photo from a visit to a museum in Boston a few years back. Visitors left notes of hope for others - Seeds of Hope.
