It’s #Tayberry season in #Seattle. Also shown: black raspberries.
Against my better judgement I ordered a tayberry, a hybrid of blackberry and raspberry created in 1979 near the Tay River in Scotland. Tried an ice cream with this flavor a few years ago and it tasted exactly like Pepto-Bismol. Giving it a second chance. #tayberry #berries #fruit #garden #gardening #rubus #blackberry #raspberry #hybridization

I hopped over the railing to clear out some more of the carport gutters for tomorrow's rainchain/rainbutt project and I found... the tayberries that went missing, still in nursery pots, from last year. And alive!

So that'll be going into the raised beds once I get some more soil in.

Absolutely amazed that they survived the winter, even though they were in a fairly sheltered area.

I am now layering a layered tip. One of the four shoots I attempted to layer looks like it has died back, it was last year's growth. #layering #tayberry #allotment
One of the four tip layers looks like it's worked. #tayberry #Layering #allotment
So..... Tayberries. I am trying to propagate. Last year I had good fruit off them. This year, much less so. I have two canes that had fruit on them, but fruit went straight from unripe to rotten. Possibly due to damp, cool weather in UK? Anyway, the RHS say to use tip layering to propagate. Not clear if this will work on last year's canes that have fruited this year (do I just cut these out?), or the canes that have grown from roots this year. #tayberry #allotment #sheffield

Mmmm…soufflé #pancakes with #tayberry compote.
