Every corporation, every billionaire, that threatens to leave if their taxes creep anywhere close to equitable?

Immediately wave them goodbye, call their bluff. We don't need them at all.

Oblige them to leave the business assets behind when they leave. The gap they leave can be rapidly filled with *smaller business* that has less outsized political access and is properly disciplined to operate in the local community.

Of course, most of them won't leave despite their squealing threats.

All Australian dollars are issued by Australian #GovernmentSpending, or agents they deputise. It's impossible for them to run out of their own currency, and so they can always fund anything that's available for purchase. If they then don't fund that thing, it's *only* because they choose not to.

Any politician who acts like they don't understand that plain fact of our money system, needs to be booted out for incompetence.

“I came [to Mamdani’s inauguration] expecting a political coronation. But as I worked my way through the crowd, it felt closer to a collective recalibration—a moment to take stock of how ideas once dismissed as fringe, like openly taxing wealthy citizens, were now being voiced from the steps of City Hall without apology, and to wonder how much further the shift could go.”

I Came to See Mamdani’s First Big Speech as Mayor. I Found Something Else Entirely.

New York City is working through its feelings in real time.

@KimPerales

There is no scenario in which the US pays down its debt without significantly increasing taxes on the wealthy.

When the mouthpieces of the rich tell you how terrible it will be if we tax the rich, consider previous tax rates. In the 70s the top rate of tax was 83%. In the 60s & 70s financial inequality reduced and the living standard of most people improved. #TaxTheWealthy https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpolicy/the-top-rate-of-income-tax-2/
The top rate of income tax - British Politics and Policy at LSE

If a new government were to raise the top rate of income tax, it is unlikely that the UK's highest earners will work less hard but it is likely they will try harder to avoid paying tax. That means tougher enforcement will be needed if taxes rise, says Alan Manning. For the latest research articles

In a cost-of-living crisis, the top 1% saw their wealth soar. Labour dropped its non-dom tax pledge. Still think this is “better than the Tories”? #ToryLite #TaxTheWealthy
@chris the danger of the #TaxTheWealthy is that it reinforces the idea that the govt. requires revenue to do anything. This is the neoliberal/monetarist framing of the past 50y, it must be escaped.

#TaxtheWealthy. Especially if a bunch of them are not only OK with it but are actively ASKING for it to be done!

These Canadian millionaires are asking for tax increases — but just for themselves | CBC News

A group of wealthy Canadians calling themselves 'Patriotic Millionaires' is banding together to lobby governments to increase the amount of taxes they must pay — but opponents say it will be bad for entrepreneurship in Canada.
