Since the #scientificname of a #species consists of two main components—#genus and #epitheton—#taxonomists describing #newspecies regularly face the question: what should I name my species after? Personally, I prefer an ecological characterization of the species via its #epithet. But scientists/celebrities are also frequently honored. The fact that it was now even an entire #televisionseries is a great anecdote, but has strict reference to nature work (BBC#BluePlanet)

I love #MantisFlies (#Neuropera, #Mantispidae). Here's a handheld shot of #Spaminta minjerribae here in #Canberra last night.

This is one of the surprisingly large number of groups where #taxonomists seem to have given up trying to think of new genus names and just generate anagrams of older names. Mantispa -> Spaminta. In another neuropteran group, the genus name Ascalaphus has simply been reversed to give Suhpalacsa, which I can never type.
