A long walk along the western coastline of Helsinki to the city center (and back) yesterday to, among other things, fill my belly with our traditional Christmas porridge. My first stop was at the Humallahti bay to see a rare natural phenomenon – the sun. Before yesterday, Helsinki had seen about 20 minutes of sunshine in December. While I was waiting for the sun to emerge from behind a wall of clouds on the horizon, I spotted something else interesting. There were a few mallards in the water, and then something spooked them. A goshawk?
"Oooohhh! That's a big one!" A white-tailed eagle. I scrambled to get my telephoto lens out of my backpack and only managed to get a few crappy photos of the eagle and, of course, power lines.
I continued my journey to the Rajasaari island, Taivallahti, and Hietaniemi, taking a lot of photos on the way. The sun stays low in the sky in December, and therefore the couple of hours of sunshine we got looked quite pretty. Today the clouds returned because we just can't have too many nice things, can we?
