Climbed 象山/Xiangshan/Elephant Mountain today. While I've been doing a lot of walking during this trip, seems like I'm still pretty out of shape... the Taiwanese aunties and uncles with their walking sticks were going up the steps faster than me.

Nice views though! And I did do the whole (small) loop. Seems like most people turn back when they get to the peak or the observation deck a bit below the peak, rather than continuing past the peak.

I read some article that said if you make it up Elephant Mountain, it's actually not much more effort to get to some of the higher peaks on the trail, such as 拇指/Thumb Mountain. Wonder if that's actually true... Thumb Mountain is apparently about 320m, vs. Elephant's 180m. An extra 140m seems like a decent climb, but maybe it's not as steep as the climb up Elephant.

@dlupham Yeah true, we were there only for ~2h in total after a busy work day. I think you mean these shops? I almost bought a used lens in the camera shop there, but I could still control myself…

I leave you with this super friendly kitty at one of the bubble tea stands. Never seen this before, but she was really greeting everyone and wanted pets and purred all the time. I suspect she was deaf since she didn't react to any noise around.

fin.

They sell everything there from clothes to snacks to toys to gambling. A lot of it is pretty good street food. We also bought a couple of t-shirts here in a side alley. They were clearly AI made with lots of spelling mistakes. Kinda like carbon dating.

And finally we visited the Nanya night market! There were so many stalls here and so many people. Everything was temporary for only one night a week. But still very colorful and busy. Took like a full 20mins just to walk from start to finish.

There's also an electronic district next to the National Taipei University of Technology. An entire building just for selling watches, calculators, radios, computer parts, gaming rigs, displays, LEDs. We were actually looking for some specific electronic components, but manufacturing in Taipei seems to be too high level for that. Still very impressive and also endless.

They sell everything from stuffed toys to motorcycles to baggage to kitchen utensils. Everything you could ever want. It's just endless… shop after shop, level after level. At one place we had to be shepherded out by security because we got lost and forgot about the closure time. Super friendly though.

There are many such shopping malls around the city. Here is one in Banqiao called Mega City. It's huge even though it looks unassuming between all the other tall buildings.

There are of course also better options, real restaurants that are incredibly tasty. We went to a Vietnamese place with some real spicy food 🥵. Then we had the best dumplings of our lives. Of course there was an amazing Yakiniku restaurant where we finished with the juiciest Waigu imaginable. But the best was a Kurogeya restaurant where we could cook everything ourselves. I still dream about the food in Taiwan… uhh so good! 🤤

But it doesn't just go up, there are also several basement levels, where B1 and B2 are usually reserved for food courts and restaurants and everything underneath is parking. We've ate our fair share of "fast food" here which was all super quick and very cheap and still tasted amazing.
