Tonight, at dinner, I somehow began discussing blindness and colour with my nephews D and A, who are twelve and seventeen, respectively. Since they are minors, I will just use the first letters of their names. Both are fully sighted and I am totally blind, having never seen. D thought of an idea whereby colours would be represented by different textures that could be drawn onto the page. Then, he said, they could be equated with things that connect the colours to things e.g. blue with wavy lines like the ocean. A said that, when he was around ten or so, he had pens that, when turned at the top, would change not only their tip and colour, but also the texture on the ink! Unfortunately, he couldn't remember the name of the brand. I asked Perplexity, and it gave me suggestions like Cra-Z-Art Spiral or Twistable Texture Pens, magic texture changers, Moon Monster Texture Changers, and Gel-X Texture Pens. I couldn't find anything about those, even in nostalgia discussions, while searching the Internet. I found something about Puffy Pens, which led me to a page with pens that, when hot air from a blow dryer is used, puff up and become tactile, but that was not what he was describing. I also found information on Hi Mark - Tactile Pens, but these sound similar to the Paint Pens for the Blind that I once tried. These aren't pens at all, but little bottles that you squeeze as you draw. Wet paint is released and dries into a plastic-feeling tactile picture. Does anyone have any idea what D was talking about? Have you used such pens, or do you know where we can find them?

In the meantime, I sent D some videos of the Sensational Blackboard and links on tactile graphics. I own the Blackboard but must find it and my tracing paper.

Woven Serenity

An overhead, slightly angled view showcasing extreme texture detail. Focus on natural, organic materials: woven rattan furniture, heavy linen cushions in muted cream or taupe, and smooth river stones arranged artfully nearby. A single, very shallow, wide ceramic bowl holds water and a floating white gardenia.

This is one of the pieces of tech I’m looking forward to playing around with at Sight Village in London this year… not that I can afford it! Last year when I looked at The Dot Pad it was listed at around £8000 and this new version has come down to less than £6500 which is still way out there but I’ll keep my eye on it in coming years. The multi-line Kindle reading experience sounds excellent and being able to draw diagrams and sketches on something so portable is very exciting! #braille #TactileArt | The Multi-Line Braille Experience That Keeps On Giving – Introducing The Dot Pad X – STRIVE Ability https://striveability.uk/2025/11/03/the-multi-line-braille-experience-that-keeps-on-giving-introducing-the-dot-pad-x/
What a wonderful experience! The artist studio was suitably shabby - no heating or loo and some ancient Victorian stairs for me to stumble up in the rain. I got to feel all kinds of ceramic artwork, mostly very abstract and reminiscent of coral or under water creatures. There were pieces that were glazed and others with plain clay and some with a mixture of both so lots of tactile elements and a variety of forms. It was a pleasure to chat to him about how he makes the artwork and what inspires him. I’ve never come across so much art that I can feel and take in for as long as I like. He was very interested in my response to the work and which textures and shapes most appealed to me #art #TactileArt #blind
I’m working on realistic techniques and creating a sort of go-to catalog so that it’s not all so impulsive and with better colour assortments.

I used the DMC pearl 907 for the moss and a sample orange sewing thread that I have to find more of, on craft felt.

Yet another gift! This one for my brother-in-laws partner. She’s an amazing mum, an awesome baker, and a super sweet lady.

The frame’s one of the many we get for free from people putting on the curb side, or has been stored in our artists abode for a different purpose.

I try my best to repurpose items, including clothes, textiles, yarn, ribbon, cords, beads, buttons, zippers, all sorts of sewing notions, tissue paper, gift wrap, boxes, etc. I can’t let anything go to waste if I can see a purpose for it.

This is one small part of many things I have control over to help the planet.

Piece no.5

I should have been starting my etching course this morning but this term’s been cancelled, I’m so disappointed! In the end I went out for a cuppa at my local cafe to cheer myself up. Now got to find something else to do on Tuesday mornings 😔 #TactileArt #Disability
Don’t you just love a coincidence… I was chatting to my hairdresser about starting my etching course again this month and she cuts the hair of a woman whose daughter happens to be Bianca Raffaella who is partially sighted and has some work in a London gallery right now! I know what I’ll be doing next week #blind #PartiallySighted #creativity #art #printmaking #TactileArt #Disability
