Rescued #Thinkpad #T440 with #FanError (the tiny earth wire on the fan comes adrift).

Not fun to solder (even with microscope) as <0,5mm diameter cable, got colophony from rework flux pen all over my hands (nasty sticky stuff), and it was *not* pretty soldering but thought it worth a try

New thermal paste applied and #laptop reassembled, it starts up now which is better than before

It will be used as a backup laptop for the office (which is why its getting Windows as I haven't yet been able to evaluate Linux Mint for office staff use) and for the online training that new care staff have to do as part of their induction process..

Frage an die #FediNerds: Mein #Thinkpad #T440 mit Linux Mint kommt langsam in die Jahre.

Was ich gerne hätte wäre ein Ersatz.

MustHave:
- Robust und günstig,
- gerne gebraucht,
- CPU mit 4 Kernen oder mehr,
- 16GB RAM,
- NVMe-SSD im 2280-Format,
- FullHD-Auflösung.

Bonus/NiceToHave:
- LTE-Modul inklusive oder einfach nachrüstbar
- Tastaturbeleuchtung.

Was empfehlt ihr mir und warum? Thinkpad T480/T490? Was anderes? Gerne boosten.

For #lenovo #thinkpad #t480 #t480s #t490 #t490s #t440 #t470 etc. #tseries under #nixOS does a/the #LTE #cellular #modem (e.g. #Fibocom #L830-EB #4G LTE #WWAN Modem) work without special measures i.e. does it "appear" in the GUI OS e.g. #gnome & become available for use automatically on installation or update of nixOS e.g. by running update of configuration in usual way? Are there special options in configuration.nix one has to set first? Even then, does it work? Anyone have LTE success here?

Weiß jemensch, ob man ein #Thinkpad #T440 (kein "s" oder "p")mit einem FullHD Panel ausstatten kann?

Meins hat 1600x900 mit Touchfunktion (was ich nicht brauche), 1920x1080 wären geiler.

Original gabs das mit dieser Auflösung wohl nicht, und bei eBay werden vereinzelt FullHD-Ersatzdisplays für "T440" angeboten, aber die Angebote sind... komisch.

It's a long shot, but does anyone have a spare backlight keyboard for the #Thinkpad #t440 series to give away? Or parts of it? The "rubber mat" under the keys lost a part, and I need to replace it. I think I still have all the keys, so it doesn't need to be a full keyboard, or the layout doesn't matter. I'll pay for shipment (to Germany) of course, and I can offer money for the spare parts, too.

@minino kauf dir vielleicht ein gebrauchtes #Thinkpad der X oder T Reihe (nicht die anderen Reihen). Wie gut Minecraft darauf laeuft weiss ich nicht, eher etwas niedrigere Einstellungen, weil Minecraft doch ein bisschen was braucht an Power.
Auf ebay kannste Thinkpads kaufen, denke #X240, #X250, #X260 oder #T440, #T450, #T460 sind gerade die Modelle, die vom Preisleistungsverhaeltnis am besten sind. Wenn du guenstig #X270 oder #T470 bekommst ist natuerlich auch gut.

Vor allem sind diese Modellreihen zu empfehlen, weil sie historisch gute Qualitaet hatten (wie das jetzt bei den neueren Modellen ist wird noch drueber diskutiert, hat aber nachgelassen) aber vor allem, weil auf ebay immer groessere Mengen verkauft werden, die von Businesskunden kommen und nach wenigen Jahren ersetzt werden.

I have abysmal battery times with a T440s. I've read that T470 and T470s handle power management regardless of device different. Any Thinkpad opinions on this?

Hmmm 🤔
So today i blogged about my steps for enhancing the #ArchLinux experience on the #T440 (Intel only). This includes one solution for overall bad fps which is totally annoying and yes i made it from unusable to 'i can barely barely live with this but it makes me feel sick' (nk). I made no progress with hours of research multible times, so i though it's hardware but now i booted Windows and have nothing to complain really except that it's Windows but everything works well. ...kinda sad.
