An einem #T14s funktioniert das #Touchpad nicht mehr. Der Hersteller selbst hat ein paar Probleme mit der Ersatzteilversorgung, also regeln wir das halt schnell selbst.

I just found out that #Lenovo changed their #ThinkPad line this year: most probably, there won't be an X13 Gen 6 2-in-1 with multi-touch.

Instead, there's a very light #X13 (w/o 2-in-1 or touch) and a new #T14s 2-in-1 with multi-touch with more weight and bigger size than the X13 of course. 🤷

Tough choice for me. 🤔

If I settle for the X13: should I go for the AMD Ryzen or the intel Core Ultra 5? (I'll run Debian 13 + Wayland + Gnome on it and I prefer more silent systems.)

Every time I set up a new laptop with #opensuse #tumbleweed #linux, I am so excited about the power of #opensource. The little refurbished #lenovo #T14s I got only took 5 minutes to install from an old USB stick. I swear that I needed more time to unpack, locate an Ethernet cable and find my way in the BIOS to set up USB boot than the system itself took for installing. Awesome.

Ich habe mir für ca 3 Euro bei #AliExpress anklebbare Aufstellfüße für mein Notebook geholt, damit es bei rechenintensiven Dingen besser an Frischluft kommt statt den Tisch aufzuheizen.

Leider hatte ich nicht bedacht, wie ungünstig bei meinem #ThinkPad #T14s das Lüftergitter liegt, sonst hätte ich ein kompakteres Modell der Füßchen genommen (gibt da sehr viele verschiedene, auch unterschiedliche Materialien - das hier sind sehr massive aus Metall, es gibt das aber nochmal deutlich kleinere und auch aus Kunststoff).

Das mittige Aufkleben ist aber noch hinreichend stabil, man muss sich schon echt doof auf eine Seitenkante stützen, damit es kippt. Bei normaler Nutzung ist es superstabil, kein Wackeln o.ä.

Kann ich also nur weiterempfehlen :)

So, #fedora uses tuned-ppd, which is an power-profiles to tuned compatibility daemon.

It translates the requests over dbus for the profiles to tuned profiles, which (for powersave) contained a section

where the `panel_power_savings=3` basically translates to a parameter of #amdgpu called panel_power_savings. The kernel parameter is `amdgpu.abmlevel`: ABM level (0 = off, 1-4 = backlight reduction level, -1 auto (default)) (int)

I basically forced this to 0 to avoid the really weird panel effects. #Powertop didn't show me significant savings there.

I wonder what exactly happens when I switch the power profile to "powersave" on my #lenovo #t14s. Definitely some parameters on the GPU get switched, because it looks generally blergh.

After many years of using the Lenovo T480 as my primary computer, I finally did upgrade to a newer system.

A Lenovo T14s Gen4 AMD with the following specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U
GPU: AMD Radeon 780M (Can play games surprisingly well!)
RAM: 32GB
SSD: 1 TB
Display: 2,8K 2880x1800 OLED
Network: WI-FI 6E and 4/5G Cellular

Of course running Fedora Linux with perfect compatibility out of the box.

I'm very satisfied with the performance and how well it can run even little bit demanding games with the iGPU (Baldurs Gate 3 at solid 45fps with FSR)

Just the keyboard is a disappointing downgrade to the T480 in my opinion. I miss the key-travel, the older ThinkPads had.
