The Engineer Who Tried to Put Age Verification Into Linux

Dylan, useful idiot with commit access, pushed age verification PRs to systemd, Ubuntu & Arch, got 2 Microslop employees to merge it, called it 'hilariously pointless' in the PR itself, then watched Lennart personally block the revert. Unpaid compliance simp.

Do we have a GUI for systemd-cryptenroll allowing people to change enrolled passphrases to unlock their LUKS partition ?

Better yet something which is capable of enrolling the tpm2 module and a fido2 key.

This is was hard one in its own way:

https://github.com/himmelblau-idm/himmelblau/pull/1079/changes/83c1b07599e75d8d4c86e7df4ddace3ff34383db

I.e. simple patch but finding exactly correct simple patch of unlimited choices was the sudoku here.

I left out dynamic update as it requires:

1. Detection of "no sessions for user" (probably through loginctl?).
2. Maintaining "no sessions" state while e.g. running recursive chown.

I did not figure this out yet and even if I had it appears to me to be at least complex in size as my initial patch. Since the current returns error on dynamic change, it leaves door open to add a opt-in flag for it later.

#Systemd has many cool and useful features. But it has on massive problem that irritates me to my core.

It does too much. When it works, it's great, but if something bad happens it taints too much of your system. While the age verification saga is optional right now, and seems harmless, it will grow like a cancerous tumour, and eventually, we end up in a situation that we have to decide whether to remove a massive part of our OS or just accept that privacy is a joke these days.

It saddenss me that people jump to implement infrastructure to support age verification in central parts of the Linux system.

It is just a field, they say.

Yes, but the field and the timing clearly points to a political agenda. The developers pushing these changed are either supporting this agenda or cowards.

Not sure what is worse.

But no matter you stand-point, be aware: This is political!

How often does Ubuntu and Debian compress packages with XZ Utils?

I have always wondered if Debian and Ubuntu ever considered near the discovery of the XZ backdoor that they would have wanted to compress OpenSSH sshd with the compression package/software XZ Utils...

Ask Ubuntu
how did systemd load liblzma?

Genuine question how did systemd load liblzma? Did you have to use xz utils to create a liblzma library or something or does systemd use its own liblzma library. How does it work.

Year 2026. I'm looking at a digital GULAG PR (systemd birthDate) via AI slop UI (GitHub which breaks its layout daily)

@jwz excellent read. I especially love this part:

"a unit for Florida will ban all packages with “trans” in the name”

#SystemD #linux #Censorship

for the longest time we as a community have been largely turning a blind eye to the icky bits of systemd; the centralized interdependent kitchen sink design that makes it a convenient yet very hard to drop dependency, the way developers have been telling each other to “just use systemd” instead of establishing implementation-agnostic standards for wanted features, etc

now that theyve come out as fashware, by embracing slop generators and voluntarily laying the groundwork for age verification (while ignoring all objections to it as “spam”, lol) i think it is a good time to stop overlooking those things; in retrospect, its design does feel like an intentionally engineered way for fashbros to have a chokehold on the ecosystem (being a microslop backdoor into it, as someone put it earlier)

there are now all the reasons for “fuck systemd” to be promoted to being the reasonable mainstream position

so by all means boycott slopstemd if youre able to. it is a shitstain on the linux desktop
