DiscogsDienstag: Ladytron – 604

Ladytron ist eine Band, die sich selbst keinem Genre zuordnen will und auch von außen sind sie schwer zu kategorisieren. Gegründet wurde die Band 1999 in Liverpool von Helen Marnie, Mira Aroyo, Daniel Hunt und Reuben Wu. Letzterer stieg 2023 aus, um sich anderen künstlierischen Projekten zu widmen. Nach drei veröffentlichten EPs erschien 2001 das Debütalbum „604“. Die Musik wird von Synthesizern dominiert, heraus kommt Synth-Pop/Electropop mit starken New-Wave- und 80er-Referenzen. Beim ersten Song des Albums, „Mu-Tron“ muss ich zum Beispiel zu Beginn an Fad Gadget denken und andere Songs erinnern an Kraftwerk, The Human League oder New Order. Dabei haben Ladytron durchaus einen Wiedererkennungswert, was zum großen Teil dem Gesang von Helen Marnie zu verdanken ist.

Die Musik ist retro, minimalistisch, orientiert sich an den Achtzigern und klingt gleichzeitig modern. Das Album lebt von seinem Understatement: Drumcomputer, warme Synth-Bässe und sparsame Melodien schaffen eine Atmosphäre zwischen Melancholie und Mechanik. Helen Marnies helle, fast emotionslose Stimme trifft auf Mira Aroyos bulgarisch gesungene, roboterhafte Parts – ein interessantes Wechselspiel zwischen Mensch und Maschine (remember Kraftwerk?).

Mein erster Kontakt mit Ladytron war „Playgirl“, ein tanzbarer Club-Hit, der an frühe New Order erinnert. Es ist neben „Destroy Everything You Touch“ vom dritten Album „Witching Hour“ noch immer mein Lieblingslied von Ladytron.
