Allantus viennensis (Tenthredinidae) foraging for nectar on a peony flower bud. This is one of several sawfly species that spends its larval days defoliating my roses. They also eat Rubus so I'll be watching my blackberries and raspberries carefully. A female cattle-poisoning sawfly, Lophyrotoma interrupta, lifts off. Presumably to poison some cattle? Who knows. (Australia).

Another unusual insect: Tenthredo baetica (ssp. dominiquei), with only 118 observations world wide, of which 29 for this particular subspecies. It's a wasp – sort of: a sawfly.

The rear limbs are rather large, and I wonder why. For carrying prey?

Wikipedia points out an interesting reversal: in the Tenthredo genus, the larvae eat plants while the adults prey on other insects. Whereas many typical wasps do the opposite: the adults sip nectar but hunt insects to feed their young. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenthredo One wonders then what is this adult doing on a flower, engaging in motion patterns characteristic of foraging on nectar and pollen.

Seeing a lot of these little guys flying around Austin. Halidamia affinis, a small sawfly that feeds on Gallium catchweeds.

Gestern saß an der Hauswand am Café Ludwig dieses etwa 3cm große Insekt: Es ist eine Gelbe Kurzfühlerholzwespe oder Riesenlaubholzwespe, Tremex fuscicornis. Sie gehört zu den Holzwespen. Das ist eine kleine Familie der Hautflügler aus der Gruppe der Pflanzenwespen. Holzwespen legen ihre Eier in das Holz von Bäumen, die Larven ernähren sich dann von holzbewohnenden Pilzen.
