What Ohio State students need to know about Senate Bill 1

Senate Bill 1 has caused a handful of changes affecting the daily lives of students at Ohio State.  SB 1, a bill that bans diversity, equity and inclusion programming and faculty striking, limits the teaching of controversial subjects and requires course syllabi to be public online, was passed on Mar. 25. SB 1 went into […]

Ohio State prohibits most land acknowledgements

Ohio State has banned land acknowledgements from written class materials and verbal statements, unless directly related to the subject of the course, to comply with Senate Bill 1. SB 1 is a bill passed by the Ohio legislature that bans diversity, equity and inclusion programming, as well as faculty striking, per prior Lantern reporting. A […]

Just heard of "Project Oversight"--Heritage Foundation's harassing public #universities that are offering coursework related to #DEI. It is demanding #syllabi and other materials from UNC. Another example of the #GOP's overreach into the intellectual and social development of our country. The "kids" attending these courses are adults age 18+, most voluntarily enrollment. It's sick that the #GOP is making it harder for them to learn about topics that they *want* to know. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty-issues/academic-freedom/2025/07/29/conservative-org-requests-materials-70-chapel-hill
Conservative Org. Requests Materials for 70 Chapel Hill Courses

The Oversight Project, founded by the Heritage Foundation, is using an open records request to search for terms like “DEI” and “gender identity.” Faculty say it encroaches on academic freedom.

Classroom Policy/Guidance on AI Generative Tools

This form is to collect and share examples of policies/classroom syllabi that are instructors are using that focus on AI Generative Tools (e.g. ChatGPT, MidJourney, Dall-E, etc.). If you have one that you would like to share, I will place it on this document with others so that folks can see these examples and help to figure out their own approach. If you have an Institutional-wide Policy that you would like to share, please use this form which will go to this resource. If you have any questions about this form or the document where this will end up, please contact, Lance Eaton. If you wish to submit yours but remain anonymous in some capacity, please email me at the contact above. Emails are collected for follow up clarifications, they will not be shared on the document unless requested in the final question ("Additional information you want to share"). Otherwise, we'll share the policy, the course name, institution, and name of the person sharing (unless indicated otherwise). Banner image - Photo by MJH SHIKDER on Unsplash.

I'm also searching for resources on the web. It is really great when I run into a syllabus that does not have any class content in it. Oh, you got loads of class rules, but who knows what the class actually covers.

I'm also realizing that the US is as bad as Canada when it comes to ensuring consistency. I find Precalculus syllabi that don't include limits.

Lol wut???

Isn't this a Pre*calculus* class?!

I guess universities here have to do the same thing that École Polytechnique de Montréal had to do when I went there. The first year was designed to equalize the student population. I was bored out of my skull because the classes I had prior to entering covered the necessary material.

@bryanalexandee #Syllabi in #Japan are mostly generated by their instructors, sometimes standardized for basic courses, while the Ministry of #Education (MEXT) ratchets up pressure on #universities to comply with various evolving standards. Universities depend on the Ministry for subsidies, and so they generally urge instructors to comply with the latest guidance, at least on paper. Faculty members are surprisingly free in ostensibly group-oriented Japan, and departments in a big #university can have a measure of autonomy. The freedom partly stems from the general practice in business and society of harboring unspoken expectations, that people should just know their role. Foreign workers or spouses (!), etc., cannot easily find out what is expected culturally, and their proposed innovations tend to set off invisible land mines.
