I put a footnote recently to a similar call to "Use FOSS, people!" as it should come with the notion that #FOSS does not appear out of the blue, especially not valuable, sustainable FOSS that satisfies all the real needs that these people have. FOSS can do much better to anticipate them, which is my fascination in exploring and elaborating Social experience design (SX) at https://coding.social ..

https://social.coop/@smallcircles/116656790000134936

#SX focuses on the ability to form social supply chains within the #commons, and foster chaordic organization where commons participants engage in #service development, delivery, and exchange so that over time a commons based value #economy can emerge.

Instead of FOSS projects, SX refers to SOSS initiatives. Sustainable open social software / systems / services / solutions / social experiences. FOSS then is just the codebase + a license, the deliverable at the end of the pipeline that must satisfy needs, and bridge the gap between tech and people.

Like the previous article on Grassroots fediverse evolution, this is a long blog post, so I provided an article summary to be TL;DR'ed 😊

Your observation is spot on. Yes, we all have our individual dreams that we pursue. Our problem is that they are less likely to be realized, as the world about us turns to shite due to the vile Hypercapitalism that festers and rules supreme.

What I am talking about relating to #SX has much to do about #Emergence. How can we realize our individual dreams in emergent cocreation spaces that help us do the realization?

That's NOT about #Governance. Not directly at least. Governance is top-down overlay structure to manage power dynamics at small scales, in the large scale its entirely emergent too. At least it is in our chaotic grassroots #commons.

SX takes all that into account, and is based on intrinsic values of #Humanity and #Freedom as the starting point for solution development. SX solutions can be small, but might be society-scale just as well, designed for having profound societal impact.

But that requires the ability to foster emergence at scale first of all.

> So I would say: do not be afraid of standing on the shoulders of giants. [..] So, to answer your question: we have built the foundations. Now it is time to use them more. Continuing to develop everything from scratch may be enjoyable for some people

In my blog post I briefly mention that related to Social experience design, and the mindset / perspective shifts that are involved, there is a different way to perceive our commons, which is less likely to lead to all kinds of expectation mismatches.

I mention the counter-intuitive first rule of Hedonic peer production again, of:

> Do not ask what you can do for the commons, but what the commons can do for you.

This turns things upside down to how we usually view our #commons participation e.g. in an implied "I created this FOSS project already, so now I deserve your contributions". That is a false notion. You should not be expecting that, can't expect that, and have firm drivers and motivators.

Fedizens, we dream! ✊

But what do we dream about? How do our dreams relate, where do they overlap? Might we realize them together? Turn our online places into a delightful commons of cross-pollination and cocreation? How can we make progress towards forging a better world together, and sustain that progress? Can we turn our collaborative efforts into much more than the sum of their constituent parts, and move on shared vision into a brighter future together?

Questions, questions.

In my previous blog post on Shared responsible ownership I claimed that a commons can be 🔥 ignited, and become unstoppable as it realizes positive societal impact. Able to withstand the corrosive forces of Hypercapitalism that seek to corrupt it.

Revolutionary evolution is possible! ✊

#Fediverse is the perfect environment to make this happen. We laid the foundations already. We have soil, so now we can blossom. 🌻

Fedizens, let's dream! ✊

Fediverse of dreams

Social coding helps overcome the Paradox of Emergence, which entails that without following our dreams, we are unable to pursue a shared vision.

Great that you found the lists useful. There are 2 other fediverse-related list in the delightful commons initiative.

Delightful Lists

@flancian it depends 😅

On one hand #SX constitutes an entire new field of #ICT. A perspective and mindset shift, a way of viewing technology development and adoption differently, and be able to perceive the huge gap to where tech ends and real human needs start. There's some 'Umdenken', rethinking involved. Going the opposite direction from the tech-first approach that dominates today. "We create tech, and you must adapt to it" is the implicit call of the #DigitalTransformation hype, for instance. It is already implied by the name.

Being an entire field, it is open to any adventurer to explore in their own way. There's a huge niche, especially for grassroots social web based ecosystems.

And then there's my own applied research on an opinionated SX methodology at https://coding.social

Here I'm ready to set a growth process in motion that leads to formation of a #commons based value economy. However, I lack savings and income, thus this is hobby track only and very slow-moving atm.

Social coding commons

@fgraf

Yes, indeed. @Johns_priv also brought this up, to which I replied here:

What the discussions to the poll shows is that there is so much nuance, and numerous communication use cases and edge cases.

And in the call to "join the fediverse" and plug in to the wire there is high risk that this nuance is not properly addressed, or is even unaddressible by the general approach that is followed. It is not "been there, done that, copy mastodon, bolt on feature". That organic chaotic growth does not have a naturally healthy outcome. It can grow the blob too.

That is more or less the key point of my blog post on Grassroots fediverse evolution: that there is a sweet spot to be found between spontaneous grassroots emergence and orchestrated top-down standardization and guidance.

https://coding.social/blog/grassroots-evolution

#SX has a focus on the prosocial design patterns that underly all the various online communication modes, and these can be defined in a tech-independent manner.
