In 2023, 14 Member States were affected by African swine fever (ASF) and it caused a five-fold increase in outbreaks in domestic pigs compared to the previous year. These are the main findings of the latest annual epidemiological report published by EFSA today.
With a fatality rate of almost 100%, #ASF has swept across #Asia, #Europe and #Africa, devastating domestic and wild pig populations over the past 10 to 20 years. In #Borneo, the loss of #BeardedPigs is already having an enormous impact on cultures and communities that depend on them for food. Before, bearded pigs once accounted for 81% of hunted wildlife by weight in some villages. Now, that number is closer to zero. #SwineFever
