The drays at present used in street slurry collection, the report stated, were exceedingly heavy, unsuitable, inefficient, and costly. They did not tip, and that necessitated the slurry being shovelled out by hand. The committee considered their immediate replacement by a suitable tipping vehicle adaptable to horse and motor traction essential.…
Each year would see a considerable expansion of the smooth-surfaced roads in the city, every mile of which meant a material decrease in the street slurry collected, and the necessity for the introduction of a better means of cleansing these streets became apparent. Most efficient, modern mechanical sweepers and cleaners were in use in most parts of the world where smooth-surfaced roads existed. Not only were they cheaper in operation than the present hand methods, but they allowed the streets to be swept more frequently and thoroughly, thus maintaining a better standard of street cleanliness. The committee, therefore, recommended the purchase of a mechanical sweeper.…
