stomach contents XXL

Vending machine filled with plastic toys that have been ingested by Laysanalbatrosses in the Pacific Ocean. The objects were found in the bolus of dead albatrosses on Midway and Kure Atoll (Northwestern Hawaiian Islands).

Realized with the help of Kure Atoll Conservancy.

Space Journey / Rosetta

Risograph based on the trajectory of the ESA probe “Rosetta”, which was send into space in 2004 to explore the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and crashed on the comet’s surface in 2016 after the mission was completed.

The work was realized during an Artist-in-Science Residency of the artist at the European Space Agency (ESA) hosted by Kultur einer Digitalstadt in Darmstadt in 2022.

The print was produced by Herr und Frau Rio in Munich and is a limited, signed and numbered edition.

Space Journey / Gaia

Risograph, inspired by the movement pattern of the space telescope ‘Gaia’ (ESA), which has been mapping our galaxy since it was launched in 2013. Among other things, the data collected has been used to create the most detailed map of the Milky Way to date. The telescope was decommissioned on 27 March 2025

MICROPLASTICS II / Portrait

Portrait of the artist covered with microplastic particles that she had collected in the frame of an intervention ("Microplastics") realized in 2016. During three hours she sat at Playa de Montaña Bermeja/Lanzarote and cleared 1 squaremeter of microplastics. 1370 pieces were counted.

The work was later used in the campaign "In your face" by Ocean. Now! -> https://ocean-now.org/inyourface/

..and was just recently featured in the scientific paper "Revealing the Invisible: Marine Plastic Waste and its Effects in Science-Inspired Visual Art" by Silvia Kurr as a case study (IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science):

NORTH SEA // Surprise Eggs

Oil painting inspired by Patrick von Kalckreuth's "Schaumkronen auf Wogender See" (1950), commissioned by a Chinese copyist in "Dafen Village" in Shenzhen on behalf of the artist. The oil paint was mixed with plastic particles obtained from shredded surprise eggs. The surprise eggs come from a vessel that lost its freight in a heavy storm on January 4th, 2017 off the coast of the East Frisian island Langeoog.

Realized with the help of Lions Club Langeoog.

Oil painting by the German artist Swaantje Güntzel inspired by the work „Schaumkronen auf wogender See“ of the painter Patrick von Kalckreuth. The image shows a powerful wave in the North Sea with a foamy white crest. The various hues go from deep blues to shimmering whites and soft greens. The oil paint was mixed with colorful plastic particles that lie on the surface of the painting. The plastic particles come from shredded surprise eggs that washed ashore the beaches of the Frisian island Langeoog after a container vessel lost 6 containers in a storm in January 2017. The first image shows the details of the plastic particles on the crest of the wave, the second image shows the complete work framed in a simple black wooden frame.

SPACE HEROINES (How to kick ass in space or The bias of AI)
13/13

Series of female super heroines who maintain law and order in the universe and fight against space debris. The work is conceived as a commentary on male-dominated space travel and of male-determined self-conceptions of space conquest. It was created in the context of an artist residency at European Space Agency (ESA/ESOC) in Darmstadt that Güntzel held in 2022. The works were generated using the open source DALL.E 2 AI from descriptions in natural language. Since then, Güntzel has continued to further develop the work, which simultaneously questions the biased practice of AI in which “heroines” are standardized as white, young, slender, mostly blond, scantily clad, over-sexualized women. More inclusive and diverse images emerged only when prompts explicitly contradicted these norms. Even then, the AI often failed to produce a more inclusive image or the results are so impaired that they are unusable (images that lacked colour, figures without faces, etc.). The series is more relevant than ever after Trump instructed NASA “‘to drop everything’ to scrub public sites of mentioning of DEI, indigenous people, environmental justice, and women in leadership” -> https://www.404media.co/nasa-dei-drop-everything-executive-order/
