August 16, 2013: there was a convenience store with a little restaurant a few miles past the shelter, so I got French toast for breakfast. I then hoofed it to the Hudson River, where I crossed on the Bear Mountain Bridge. I needed to get there before it closed. On the far side I walked up to the post office to pick up my shoes.
My package was not there. The postman helpfully showed me the tracking history, and it showed the box getting a tour of New England. Not good for my feet. Turns out my mom had written the wrong zip code, and the post office couldn't deal with that. Defeated, I walked back to the trail.
I then crossed the low point of the trail, 124 feet above sea level. It's in a zoo next to the river. The caged animals seemed so sad.
From the top of Bear Mountain I could see the NYC skyline. In the other side I had to cross the Palisades Parkway. This was, by far, the scariest road crossing on the trail, and probably my entire life. Two lanes of freeway without even a painted crosswalk, then the two going the other way. Super scary.
Since there's no water near the shelter, I had to carry it in the last few miles. Heavy.
