Academic writing is often all about planning and reaching many small goals in order to not get frustrated. This is also why I encouraged a student today to have a plan for the path and not only for the date of submission. Today rather than writing myself, I have been acting in my new role as a supervisor. Who’d have thought that coaching your PhD student who's writing her very first grant application means a combination of speed-skating coach shouting lap times *AND* marathon coach riding a bike to show up at various points along the course *AND* cheerleading all the way?
