How to disable all window borders from the VLC playback window

Is there a way to make the VLC playback window completely borderless (no title bar, no other borders)? Ideally, I would like the playback window to be completely borderless and then a separate win...

Super User

#Linux users seem to love their #terminal. Yesterday I installed #ubuntu on an old Mac mini. Problem, as usual: #Drivers. So I searched the web. #askubuntu, #superuser, … all the typical places. Lengthy articles, all starting with: sudo apt update, sudo apt upgrade.
Sometimes I believe, when you ask a Linux specialists where to get a coffe you will get this answer too…. :-) SCNR
After some more digging and getting to used to the tools, I opened the update tool, additional drivers, found the missing #Broadcom, clicked, waited. Done. No reboot. No Terminal.

Additionally: Yesterday I went to an #Apple #Store with a mac issue (old MBP Intel). Went there, 30 min later fixed at no cost.
Where would I bring my Linux computer? Need the internet. There: sudo apt update, sudo apt upgrade …

I got an email from "stackoverflowsurvey@gmail.com" about a Stack Overflow survey. Most of my participation on the Stack Exchange network is actually on SuperUser, but I figured my contributions might still be useful/relevant. I imagine the populations between the two are pretty similar. They were looking for users from the United States.

I got nerd-sniped hard by what I considered to be (mostly) excellent questions surrounding DEI-type concerns. I ended up spending way longer than 15-30 minutes on them anyway. So... I'm dumping my responses here in a thread before going to bed for the night.

This is a secret test to see how many people wince at "sudo su", isn't it?

And whether it exceeds the number of people wincing at the output of a WWW page GET being piped into a superuser shell?

✅ Solution

It's common for web applications to ignore unknown values in URL query and URL fragment. It's also a common practice to interpret URL query as a sequence of key=value parameters separated by & and ignore those of which the application is unaware — the request is processed as if only URL path and "known" query parameters (if any) were present.

Thus, for many web pages, it's possible to make up a unique alternative URL either by adding an arbitrary URL query (if not present) or inserting an arbitrary unknown query parameter (among known parameters).

In my scenario, the workaround is to create a bookmark https://www.merriam-webster.com/thesaurus/%s?fuckfirefox1 with keyword "syn" and another bookmark https://www.merriam-webster.com/thesaurus/%s?fuckfirefox2 with keyword "ant". Here "fuckfirefox1" and "fuckfirefox2" denote distinct outputs of cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generator, which could be used to reduce the chances of query parameter being recognized by server. Note that this approach is not foolproof, because some servers may be implemented to process arbitrary URL queries/query parameters.
