In this video, Guitar Pilgrim teaches many things. The one that took me by surprise is that I have been playing an A chord all wrong. Oops! Guitar Pilgrim is the best at teaching guitar ideas and techniques in a thoroughly entertaining way.

Usually I would not post anything so soon by the same presenter on the same topic; but this video was posted at YouTube a few minutes before I shut down my computer for the day yesterday. This video, then, defines "new."

ELVIS PRESLEY
"TRYING TO GET TO YOU"

"Trying To Get to You" is my all-time favorite Elvis Presley song and this is an excellent performance of it. This video comes from Elvis's 1968 NBC TV special. The soundtrack of that "comeback" special is one of my three favorite Elvis albums, the others being "The Sun Sessions" and the absolutely essential "Reconsider Baby."

According to my CD copy of "The Sun Sessions," "Trying To Get to You" was not released until March 1956, after Elvis came to prominence.

I never heard the original recording of this song by The Eagles until right now. Here it is:

1000 Day Album Challenge (#8) Elvis Presley: The Sun Sessions (1976) [08.01.24]

you may have a pink Cadillac, but don't you be nobody's fool…

having been 14 when Elvis died my main impression of the man was Fat Elvis so I couldn’t comprehend why some of the music critics to whom I paid the most attention (i.e. Robert Christgau and Greil Marcus) thought so highly of Elvis until I bought The Sun Sessions. I understood his cultural significance in the rise of Rock & Roll, but his appeal to me was not as obvious as Chuck Berry who I already loved.

I certainly bought it after high school and before my senior year of college but I’m not sure exactly when. The Sun Sessions is a compilation of most of the songs Elvis recorded for Sam Phillips’ legendary Sun Records, based in Memphis, Tennessee. Sun Records was the first label to record quite a few legends of the era including Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins.

most of Elvis’ singles for Sun featured a cover of a previously recorded R&B song on one side and a Country tune on the other. Elvis was the embodiment of Rock & Roll as a merging of Country and Blues/R&B. the songs that I came back to over and over were Mystery Train, Baby Let’s Play House, and That’s All Right.

to this day, I’m more of a Chuck Berry guy than an Elvis, but since I bought the Sun Sessions and dove into his pre-RCA music I got it. I truly understand why Elvis is The King. the other key album for me was the soundtrack from his 1968 TV Special which was the last time Elvis was genuinely cool.
