#SundayThoughts Continuing Arthur Brooks's "Meaning of Your Life." Read a great quote about finding meaning when (un)productive: "leisure is 'the basis of culture.' But so many ... default to treating leisure as simply not work and expect the temporary release from the economic compulsion of a job to be its own gratification and award. Instead, we should be using leisure to create a culture that reflects our values and creates connections with others and bonds of love and meaning." 🧵 1/2

#SundayThoughts I've been reading "The Meaning of Your Life," a new book by Arthur C Brooks. There's a chapter about social media + doom scrolling. Some tips it gave:

- no-device time during the day (e.g. meals, showering)
- no-device days during the year (e.g. holidays)
- mindful-only usage - only open social media when you have a reason

#Retirement

For me, retirement is about the end of waking to an alarm and feeling tired all day for it, and an end to most arbitrary deadlines. Those are the largest freedoms. - DS

I’m 70, I spent 35 years at a job I tolerated, and I retired expecting to finally be happy – here’s what nobody tells you about the unhappiness that follows you into your older years

Retirement doesn’t erase what you carried for decades—it just removes the distractions that kept you from noticing it. What follows isn’t a lack of freedom, but the realization that happiness was never waiting at the finish line - it needed to be built along the way.

Be where you are.

There is something here for you.

We often move through moments quickly, thinking about what’s next, what’s ahead, what’s missing.

But sometimes what we need isn’t somewhere else.

It’s right here. It's right in front of you.

Waiting to be noticed.
