I wrote a blog post with #Subnautica hints to help with this, once! Here's what I found on my hard drive (as the "blomaga" service is long since gone):
1. Be brave and check out the caves
2. Fix up your starting life pod to completion for hints
3. You can build stuff in surprising places
4. Grow plants (the original hint reads "pretend you're running a museum of natural history"... huh?)

My first Subnautica playthrough was 50 hours, but if I had these tips, I could have cut that in half.
