๐ŸŒป Almost waist-high on a 4-year-old โ€” this tiny sunflower was grown in 700 bags of dog poo! ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐ŸŒฑ

Yep, you read that right! My colleague, Stroud District Councillor Gill Thomas, is leading a research project to prove dog waste can be safely sanitised at ambient temperatures in UK conditions โ€” then used on food beds! ๐Ÿงชโ™ป๏ธ

Here in Stroud we love innovation. Time to rethink dog poo as a valuable resource, not just waste. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ  Stroud District Council has completed the purchase of 13 new affordable homes in Cam, continuing its work to increase the supply of high-quality housing for local people. ๐Ÿกโœจ

The homes are at the Lister Gardens development, built by Wain Homes on the northern edge of the village. The site is within walking distance of local amenities and Cam & Dursley train station ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿš†, with good road and rail links to Stroud, Gloucester, Cheltenham and Bristol. The development also includes areas of open space and an on-site play area. ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŽ

The council has acquired a mix of homes, including six for shared ownership (two two-bedroom houses and four one-bedroom flats) and seven for affordable rent (four two-bedroom homes, two three-bedroom homes and one four-bedroom home). ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ๐Ÿ”‘

All properties include gas central heating, solar panels, electric vehicle charging points, dedicated parking and private gardens. โšกโ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿš—๐ŸŒฑ They have been designed to be energy efficient, helping residents keep running costs down. ๐Ÿ’ท๐Ÿ’š

The wider development also supports local wildlife ๐Ÿฆ”๐Ÿฆ, with features such as bird boxes and a hedgehog highway! ๐Ÿพ

Councillor Gary Luff, Chair of the Councilโ€™s Housing Committee, said:

"Securing high-quality affordable homes in well-connected locations like Cam is vital if we're to meet the needs of our residents." ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ“‹

The homes have been secured through Section 106 agreements, which require developers to include affordable housing within new developments. These agreements allow councils and housing providers to purchase homes at a reduced cost, helping to make the most of public investment while meeting local housing need. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ˜๏ธ

There are currently more than 3,000 households on Stroud District Councilโ€™s housing register. Acquisitions like Lister Gardens form an important part of the councilโ€™s approach to increasing affordable housing, alongside its own council house building programme. ๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿ—๏ธ

I often get asked why more Green Party peeps aren't here on the Fediverse. ๐Ÿค” Don't we value what this platform stands for? Decentralisation, no ads, no algorithm. It all aligns so well with green politics! ๐ŸŒฑ

In my district (Stroud, UK โ€“ 126k people), I'd guess maybe only three or four use the Fedi. None regularly. ๐Ÿ˜ถ Whereas half the adult population uses Facebook daily. This is where I hit a brick wall every time I ask the party for greater presence here.

Green Party politics is all about impact, not purity. ๐Ÿ’š If we, as councillors, want to do stuff, save a local pub, organise an event, or challenge a planning decision, the party needs to reach the people affected, and sadly they're on Facebook. A platform I personally detest. ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ So posting there isn't an endorsement of Meta; it's simply where the people are, and that's where the resources get put. ๐Ÿ˜”

The evidence also shows door-knocking, leaflets, and face-to-face conversations still way outperform digital for changing minds. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Localism: showing up where people actually live is in the Green Party's DNA. ๐Ÿก

I'm here because running an instance is a hobby, and the Fedi connects me with other activists, journalists, tech experts, thinkers, as well as a few like-minded councillors. ๐Ÿค This is more about networking, isn't it? Not outreach so much.

I'd love to see more Greens here too. But I think the reality is that the Green Party focus is going to have to be where our communities are, which I think is right, but sad too. ๐Ÿ˜”๐ŸŒ

It could be hybrid too with an in-person meet-up in #Stroud. Iโ€™d be very happy to do some more locally.

Green-led Stroud District Council is one of the largest council house builders in the whole of England, it has been revealed.

Only three other councils in the country - Leeds, Basildon and Harlow - started more homes in 2024/25 (the date for which the latest data is available) than Stroud started in 2025/26.

We delivered 8 of then the other week in my ward; Wotton-under-Edge.
