Discovery of stromatolite-like biofilms in thermal waters sheds light on ancient ecosystems

Hungarian researchers have discovered unique bacterial communities in thermal waters that may help unravel the development of stromatolites, one of Earth's oldest rock formations. These findings not only contribute to understanding Earth's geological past but also provide valuable insights into biological and geological processes occurring in extreme environments today.

As the sun sets on a young earth four billion years ago, the tide comes in. 🌅 The world looks alien with black water thick with metals and the toxic orange atmosphere looks alien. Cyanobacteria are busily growing atop one-another and producing oxygen that will one day make way for other life.

I worked on this shoot over the course of a year while living in Australia.

The humble stromatolite fossils may not look as cool as dinosaurs, but they were the rulers of ancient Earth — and none of us would be here without them.
