They did not tip, and that necessitated the slurry being shovelled out by hand. The committee considered their immediate replacement by a suitable tipping vehicle adaptable to horse and motor traction essential.…
  Each year would see a considerable expansion of the smooth-surfaced roads in the city, every mile of which meant a material decrease in the street slurry collected, and the necessity for the introduction of a better means of cleansing these streets became apparent. Most efficient, modern mechanical sweepers and cleaners were in use in most parts of the world where smooth-surfaced roads existed. Not only were they cheaper in operation than the present hand methods, but they allowed the streets to be swept more frequently and thoroughly, thus maintaining a better standard of street cleanliness. The committee, therefore, recommended the purchase of a mechanical sweeper.…

So far so good, this is turning out to be easier than I thought, even on the cold (-10C) days. Now, I did need to get some gear (ski goggles because I kept tearing up) but it's been fine otherwise.

One complaint I do have is with regards to #streetcleaning There are still lots of leaves in the parking-separated paths which, when wet, are awful to cycle through.
