Entanglement is an animal welfare issue- Injuries cause prolonged suffering for whales and dolphins – early intervention is crucial

"Globally, scientists estimate 300,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises are killed each year due to entanglement or incidental capture (bycatch)."

"In one recent Australian case, rescuers removed hundreds of metres of fishing line, hooks, rope and buoys from a young whale whose movement and feeding ability had already been severely compromised."

"Even when animals are successfully disentangled, stress, impaired feeding, chronic pain and severe infection from entanglement injuries may already be irreversible."

"Rescue is not simply whether the animal is cut free from the net but whether the intervention allows full recovery afterwards." >>

Entanglement injuries cause prolonged suffering for whales and dolphins – early intervention is crucial

Entanglement is a major animal welfare issue for marine mammals. A successful rescue is not just whether an animal is cut free but whether it recovers from injuries.

Experts are baffled as rarely seen beaked whales are involved in a series of strandings.

A series of strandings of one of the world’s deepest dwelling and most rarely seen types of whale in the last few days across northern Europe have left scientists trying to understand why so many of the deep-diving whales have appeared.

There is no change in the position of the #Wakatu. There is a strong southerly wind blowing, but the sea is only moderate.
The captain informed a “Marlborough Express” representative that if the weather remained fine he was hopeful that the vessel would be got off, but he said that it would have to be very fine. The crew are still standing by.
About midday yesterday, when on her voyage north, the steamer Orepuki stood in close to the wreck, and exchanged signals with Captain Robertson. She resumed her voyage North after about ten minutes.

Whales are washing up along east coast of US. #OffshoreWind opponents blame future wind farms. Experts see different threat
Theory Republicans use to try to pin wind farms for #strandings is that noise created by #windturbines could disrupt #echolocation that some whales use for navigation, causing them to strand. This distracts from very real risks shipping vessels pose to whales navigating US shorelines, experts say

There’s no evidence yet that offshore wind is to blame for whale standings along the east coast; experts see a different threat.
