"We may ruin the ocean before we even understand it.

We’re only just starting to understand the deep sea and, by extension, our planet. Moving forward with something as intrusive and invasive as deep-sea mining in a place about which we still have so much to learn simply makes no sense."

I've been to the Mariana Trench. The choice is clear: Protect one of earth's last frontiers or destroy it before we even understand what we're losing.

Greenpeace - "Trespass’ Notice Delivery to Seabed Mining Company in Sydney - News Access

- GP0SU8C8Q Māori activist Rukutai Watene from Taranaki delivers a ‘trespass’ notice to Trans Tasman Resources in Sydney, warning the company to not pursue seabed mining in Aotearoa - New Zealand. The notice was hand delivered by Rukutai Watene on behalf of Ngāti Ruanui and Greenpeace Aotearoa at the headquarters of Manuka Resources - parent company of Trans Tasman Resources (TTR) - sending a message that seabed mining is not welcome in Aotearoa. For over a decade TTR has been trying - and failing - to start an iron sand mining operation in the South Taranaki Bight. If it went ahead, the seabed mine off the coast of Taranaki would be one of the first in the world and cause damage to ocean life and habitats.

Send a message to political leaders in New Zealand, demanding an outright ban to seabed mining, so we don't have to keep fighting off this ridiculous and destructive project for another decade.

Govt announces critical mineral ‘slush fund’ as TTR flees the fast track - Greenpeace Aotearoa

Today, as seabed miners Trans Tasman Resources (TTR) withdrew from their failing Fast Track bid, the NZ government has announced a$80 million dollar ‘critical minerals slush fund.’ Greenpeace is questioning if this signals an invitation for TTR to  have another bite at the cherry.

Seabed mining company TTR gives up on the Fast Track process - Greenpeace  - Greenpeace Aotearoa

Trans-Tasman Resources have responded to the Fast Track Expert Panel’s draft decision, saying they will not propose any changes to conditions.

Greenpeace Aotearoa

The TTR Taranaki seabed mining project may be on its way to the rubbish bin, but the next goal is an explicit, outright ban on seabed mining.

Let the whales, dolphins, penguins and multitude of creatures thrive in peace.

Let the iwi and hapū look after their rohe.

Let families catch fish to feed themselves.

Let responsible tourism enjoy the wonders of natural life there.

And if you absolutely have to have some kind of industry, make it an offshore wind farm, in a limited, clearly defined area of the region.

That is an important step in the energy transition to a carbon free economy, creating jobs that do not depend on exploitation of the environment and the inevitable boom and bust cycles of mining with the ensuing environmental devastation it leaves behind.

Feasting on the salty tears of my enemies (the mining lobby and their frustrated reckless extraction plans).

For over a decade the community, experts and iwi alike, have opposed this project in every court available, through every single stage of the process. It has been rejected over and over again. Every single time.

The fast track lowered the bar for it to go through and even then it could not clear it.
It sucks, plain and simple.

Take a hint Alan Eggers, haere atu.
