the underside is often more interesting

Although I really enjoy more traditional embroidery, my favorite pieces might be the more rustic and unrefined ones. I have this thread that is silk wrapped around a stainless steel core. It is really hard to sew with but the stitches have this wonkiness that I just love. And the back with its randomness and knots is often the best part.
Another stitched sketchbook page, using scraps of indigo dyed fabric from a dyeing session a few years ago.

rust[ic] books
Small books of rusted cyanotypes made from tea bags with waxed paper bag covers. Making things from what would otherwise just get thrown away is particularly satisfying to me. I look at almost every scrap of paper now and think hmmm… I might be able to use that. I’ve saved candy wrappers a month before finally letting go. There’s a long roll of packing paper in my closet just waiting to be made into a sketchbook, or something. That I will definitely keep.
