Rhythmatism by Steve Reid, released on Mustevic Sound Records in 1976.

Drummer and composer extraordinaire Steve Reid’s ‘Rhythmatism’ is one of his deepest and most radical of albums of all time and features some of the heaviest jazz players - Arthur Blythe AKA Black Arthur, Charles Tyler, David Wertman and others. The album was originally released on Reid’s own Mustevic Sound label in 1976.

Reid was born in the South Bronx and grew up in Queens, New York. He played in the house band at Harlem's Apollo Theatre, accompanying James Brown as well as playing in Sun Ra’s Arkestra...He began his career as a teenager in the 1960s as a drummer at Motown when he played on Martha and The Vandellas’ ‘Heatwave’ (aged 14).

At the end of the 1960s Reid was sentenced to four years in jail as a conscientious objector of the Vietnam war... - Phonica Records

Visions of the Third Eye by New Life Trio released on Mustevic Sound Records in 1980.

"...A string trio of Wertman, Ross and violinist Terry Jenoure was set to record, but Jenoure dropped out just prior to the date. This led Wertman to call his friend Steve Reid to come join the two at the Tin Pan Hollow Studios in Vermont to record what would become ‘Visions Of The Third Eye’ on December 6, 1978. Originally conceived as an all-acoustic date, the recording would morph slightly when Ross added electric guitar muscle on a number of pieces. Reid would then take the helm and release the recording in 1980, giving a very auspicious birth to what has now become a classic spiritual jazz recording..." - Finder Keepers Records

Universal Sounds of America Review by Thom Jurek

..Numerous cuts here employ the word "space" in their titles and one references it directly. Belgrave, Reid, Morris and the Art Ensemble all had titles reissued on the Universal Sound label (and Reid recorded afresh for Soul Jazz). While the focus here is on the diversity of, to borrow a term from the AEC, "Great Black Music Ancient to the Future," it is deeply rooted in '70s out jazz, with only Belgrave and Morris providing deeper, wider visions. Morris' ..."Kitty Bey" replies on modal jazz and Latin rhythms to get his killer track across. Likewise, Sanders uses an electric piano to position himself in space on the gorgeous "Astral Traveling," and Belgrave take nearly ten with his "Space Odyssey," that reflects on funk, electronic abstraction and Detroit soul-jazz to get his rather elegant point across.."

First time at @wavetable_ed today. Great evening of electronic music from #AndrewOstler, #SteveReid and #AlessandroMastroianni.

Only slight downside, was me with wallet stuffed with cash hoping for merch. Merch available but no one appeared to be selling it at the end before I had to leave to catch my bus home. 😞

Maybe try to get hold of it before the start, if possible, next time. Now booked up through to the March Weekender. Looking forward to @FieldLinesCartographer and @sjbucks then.
