Ground News on Instagram: "The State Department has begun revoking passports from Americans who owe large amounts of unpaid child support, starting with roughly 2,700 people who owe at least $100,000, according to officials. The policy is expected to expand to anyone owing more than $2,500, the threshold established under a 1996 federal law. Until now, the penalty was generally applied only when parents attempted to renew their passports. Under the new system, the Department of Health and Human Services will notify the State Department of qualifying cases so existing passports can also be revoked. Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Mora Namdar said, “We are expanding a commonsense practice that has been proven effective at getting those who owe child support to pay their debt.” She added, “Once these parents resolve their debts, they can once again enjoy the privilege of a U.S. passport.” The State Department said states have recovered about $657 million in unpaid child support since the program began in 1998, including more than $156 million over the past five years. Americans whose passports are revoked while abroad will need to obtain emergency travel documents from a U.S. embassy or consulate in order to return home. 🔗Head to our bio for the full story"
