My understanding is the founding fathers were fearful of having a #StandingArmy and therefor in #peacetime we would rely on "citizen soldiers" (aka the #militia) to be ready to respond to *outside* threats (England, France, Spain, etc.). Hence, each male head of household would have a musket over the fireplace (or something like that). 😉

Conclusion: The militias were clearly under government (state) control and the 2nd amendment was not intended to allow carte blanche gun ownership by individual citizens.
