Tired of the interminable emacs vs vi editor wars (with praise for nano baked in)? Back in 2018 I wrote "ed(1) mastery is a must for a real Unix person" https://nxdomain.no/~peter/ed_mastery_is_a_must_for_real_unix_person.html - a review of @mwl 's then recent book #ed #vi #emacs #editors #unix #editorwars #standardeditor
ed(1) mastery is a must for a real Unix person

My stock answer to all the oh-so-tired "how to exit vim(1)" schtick includes ref to https://nxdomain.no/~peter/ed_mastery_is_a_must_for_real_unix_person.html (alternatively https://bsdly.blogspot.com/2018/04/ed1-mastery-is-must-for-real-unix-person.html if you really don't mind being tracked) #vi #vim #howtoexitvim #ed #editors #standardeditor #unix #oldfart #greybeard

ed(1) Mastery is (still) a Must for Real Unix Persons, according to @vermaden's valuable news https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2024/09/30/valuable-news-2024-09-30/ (the article is at https://nxdomain.no/~peter/ed_mastery_is_a_must_for_real_unix_person.html as well as the tracked prettified place) #ed #unix #standardeditor #editors #development #history

The Valuable News weekly series is dedicated to provide summary about news, articles and other interesting stuff mostly but not always related to the UNIX/BSD/Linux systems. Whenever I stumble upon…

I'm in love with organization and making things work well.

I love the ideas behind things like #Zettlekasten, #OrgMode, and more.

Did you know that [the original wiki][1] represents roughly 120MB of data if you convert it to a flat text file? That represents 30 years of knowledge building, so pretty darn good.

If you use WikiText (or CamelCase) then you don't need any fancy tools. #vim, #emacs, or heck #nano and #ed the #StandardEditor are perfectly sufficient.

@gnomon ed is more than 50 years old, small, and works fine

@RL_Dane I do use vi/vim from time to time, but I genuinely like using ed(1). I find it let's me focus more on the actual content of changes. It also keeps me from spending too much time making vim look pretty.

@goosey @mwlucas @ed1conf Also, I ended up making an ed(1) cheat sheet and printing it out because I couldn't remember the man page well.

@alexbuzzbee I use ed once in a while to quickly search & replace. I wouldn't work in it full-time if I didn't have to, but it works fine. Very useful if you have a slow Internet connection and need to edit on a server.

Finally time to boast post about a bday gift I bought myself:

"Ed Mastery" by @mwlucas - a masterpiece for those of us too lazy to learn only reading the source and man(1).

Really enjoying my Friday night!
Working on my ed(1) in the sh(1)!
