New London Says Hands off our Rights! · Hands Off

**Donald Trump and Elon Musk think this country belongs to them.** New London is fighting back! They're taking everything they can get their hands on—our health care, our data, our jobs, our services—and daring the world to stop them. This is a crisis, and the time to act is now. 🚨 **On Saturday, April 5th, we're taking to the streets to fight back with a clear message: Hands off!** 🚨 📍 Where: Sidewalks in front of New London Superior Court 70 Huntington Street, New London CT 06320 📅 When: 11 am - 1 pm, April 5, 2025 Our event will take place at the intersection of Huntington and Broad Streets in New London CT. Signs and voices welcome, but no bullhorns, bad attitudes or violence allowed. We protest peacefully, now and always. This mass mobilization day is our message to the world that we do not consent to the destruction of our government and our economy for the benefit of Trump and his billionaire allies. Alongside Americans across the country, we are marching, rallying, and protesting to demand a stop the chaos and build an opposition movement against the looting of our country. A core principle behind all Hands Off! events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. Check out handsoff2025.com for more information.

Sad to see this Stop and Shop closing. Fortunately its site is adjacent to another major grocery store, meaning no food desert will be created.

Simultaneously, disappointed so see that some of Stamford's Board of Reps (somehow) using the closing as an opportunity to peddle anti-housing narratives.

Despite possibly being Connecticut's most dynamic city, some people in Stamford are dead set against anything new. Case in point: some neighbors object to the construction of modest three-story townhouses near their single-family houses for fear that they might see them. When we have a severe housing crisis on our hands, and a dwindling opportunity for home ownership, the fact that these quibbles can kill projects is maddening.

Stamford's zoning laws have explicitly prioritized conserving "the value of property" over the city's actual housing needs for decades. Now, the city's Zoning Board is planning to revise this language, and stress the importance of the city's affordability and environmental needs. This would be an good, albeit symbolic, step in the right direction. Looks like the city's Republican-led NIMBY group is already trying to stop it though...

Stamford is home to a number of aging and largely vacant office parks throughout the city. Converting these office parks to housing is an opportunity to tackle the issue of housing unaffordability, and earn more tax revenue. City officials acknowledge this, on paper. Yet time and time again, they reject such conversions on various grounds. This time, the conversion of the River Bend Center in Springdale could be rejected.
