A less realistic, but maximally fun SSTO.

These tilt-engines are way more powerful and efficient than what I usually use in KSP, to the point where they probably are unrealistic af. That’s why I didn’t even bother with the TWR or dV this time. But having one part that can do a tilt engine is SO nice. If you want it to be a bit more realistic, I guess you can lower the thrust limiter. 

Its very power hungry, but it comes with an internal nuclear reactor which has a heatsink slapped on to it. This way it can run for quite a long time before running out of juice. Some capacitors also help extending that time. The cargo bay doors can also act as radiators if opened.

The COM is very carefully balanced so this thing is stable both in horizontal and vertical flight, the RCS is centred and the docking port aligns with it reasonably well. (you can dock it to the front of a mothership and it won’t make it spin out of control. If you want to use the engines to propel the other ship though, you might spin)

Update: put a big liquid fuel station with no on-board oxidizer into a perfect 300km orbit above Kerbin, using only a single NERV engine for orbital maneuvers. It... works... if you're patient. ;)

I need to add some RCS fuel to refill my SSTO, so I'll send up a smaller probe with just RCS fuel, and several reaction wheels to help turn the big fuel tanker around.

The reason for having the fuel tanker run on only liquid fuel is that I'm running an older version of KSP that lacks the vent part that lets you get rid of unwanted oxidizer. So it's best to just pump it into the massive tanks on the fuel station. Then maybe later on a different craft that actually wants oxidizer can come pick it up. The two NERV engines on my SSTO are powerful enough for a Műn landing, so I'm not worrying about carrying oxidizer anywhere. It's just there initially to help the SSTO get into orbit using the two RAPIER engines in closed-cycle mode.

Man, this game is so stupidly fun. XD

So, easier to make SSTOs with a full tech trees. The dedicated dual mode engine that can flip from Air Breathing to Closed Cycle makes it a snap.

The only challenge at this point is to determine the point of much fuel of each sort (LOX + Liquid Fuel) to bring before it becomes inefficient. Oh yeah, and to identify drag (the Red lines in the picture with flight dynamics turned on).

Anyways, unsurprisingly the flight went well - as always for this Kebal vet. End result is one 4 slot (2 x 2 large bays) cargo bay so it can haul REALLY BIG cargo up into orbit.
