If it works as designed, it could reopen the skies to supersonic passenger travel over land. One of the main reasons previous supersonic aircraft such as the Concorde were retired was due to their extremely loud sonic booms.
On April 3, 2026 the X-59 completed its first wheels up flight, reaching 20,000 feet and approximately 460 mph.
