Not everything in the bog garden is carnivorous β€” but this is just as fascinating! 🌿 The sphagnum moss (Sphagnum sp.) is sporulating, sending up hundreds of tiny sporophytes topped with ripe spore capsules. These delicate stalks are the moss's way of reproducing β€” once the capsules open, spores are released into the air to start new colonies. Sphagnum is the unsung hero of the bog garden: it keeps the substrate acidic and moist, creating the perfect conditions for carnivorous plants to thrive. But in this moment, it's stealing the show entirely.

Scientists discover protein key to bacteria's survival in extreme environments

Scientists have discovered a protein that enables bacteria to shut down into dormant spores under extreme conditions. The process, which enables the bacteria to become practically indestructible, explains why bacteria can survive in uninhabitable places such as under the permafrost, in the depths of the ocean or in outer space.
