🇫🇷 Demain, la franchise ferroviaire GTR qui englobe : Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink et Great Northern repassera sous statut public. C'est une étape importante dans le processus de reprise car GTR est responsable pour 1 voyage sur 6 par rail au Royaume-Uni, ce sont des centaines de millions de voyageurs transportés chaque année.

L'occasion de poster quatre photos qui datent d'il y a 21 ans déjà lors d'un court séjour à Brighton. Les rames Class 460 ont été transformées après leur retrait des services Gatwick Express. Elles étaient surnommées "Darth Vador" du fait de leur avant particulier qui évoque le méchant de Star Wars. Les automotrices class 319 ont aussi déserté la région.

Va-t-on assister à la renaissance de l'inoubliable Network SouthEast qui naissait il y a quarante de cela dans le cadre de la sectorisation de British Rail? NSE a débuté le 10 juin 1986 et a été démantelé le 1er avril 1994.

🇬🇧 Tomorrow, the GTR rail franchise which includes: Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Great Northern will return to public ownership. This is an important step in the return in public ownership of the railway as GTR is responsible for 1 in 6 rail journeys in the UK, with hundreds of millions of passengers carried each year.

It gives me an opportunity to post four photos from 21 years ago during a short stay in Brighton. The Class 460 EMUs were transformed after being withdrawn from Gatwick Express services. They were nicknamed "Darth Vader" because of their particular nose which evokes the Star Wars villain. Class 319 EMUs have also deserted the region.

Are we going to witness the rebirth of the unforgettable Network SouthEast which was born (almost exactly) forty years ago as part of the sectorisation of British Rail? NSE started on June 10th, 1986 and was dismantled on April, 1st in 1994.

🇫🇷 Parmi les quelques photos argentiques scannées aujourd'hui, deux vues de la gare de Liège-Guillemins à la fin des années 1990 (1997 ou 1998).

La première photo montre à quel point les automotrices doubles dites "classiques" de la SNCB/NMBS étaient encore omniprésentes avec les trains L (omnibus) vers Verviers-Central à la voie 7, celui pour Namur à la voie 8 et le train IR pour Antwerpen-Centraal via Hasselt et Aarschot. Toutes portent la livrée bordeaux. Et oui, vous ne rêvez pas, il y a bien une cabine téléphonique sur le quai!

La seconde photo, nous permet de voir l'ancienne passerelle piétonne qui permettait de rejoindre le quartier derrière la gare. Le site est totalement méconnaissable aujourd'hui. En outre, alors qu'une automotrice break quitte la gare en direction de Maastricht (NL), une machine série 15 vient de mettre en tête d'un EuroCity vers Paris-Nord via Namur et Charleroi. Il est composé de voitures Corail de la SNCF. Les voies 2 à 5, à l'avant-plan (la voie 2 n'est pas visible), servaient souvent de voie de garage pour des locomotives, la voie 5 servait de temps à autres pour la réception des trains venant de Jemelle.

🇬🇧 Among the few film photos scanned today, two views of Liège-Guillemins station at the end of the 1990s (1997 or 1998).

The first photo shows how omnipresent were the "classic" SNCB/NMBS 2-Car EMUs of the SNCB/NMBS. We have here L trains (stopping services) to Verviers-Central on track 7, that one for Namur on track 8 and the IR train to Antwerpen-Centraal via Hasselt and Aarschot. All wear the burgundy livery. And yes, you are not dreaming, there is indeed a telephone booth on the platform!

The second photo allows us to see the old pedestrian bridge which allowed people to reach the area behind the station. The site is completely unrecognizable today. In addition, while a "Break" EMU leaves the station towards Maastricht (NL), a Class 15 locomotive has just been placed in front of an EuroCity service towards Paris-Nord via Namur and Charleroi. It is formed of SNCF Corail stock. Tracks 2 to 5, in the foreground (track 2 is not visible), often served as a siding for locomotives, track 5 was used from time to time to receive trains coming from Jemelle.

🇫🇷 Ce 2 mai 2005, je me trouvais sur les hauteurs de la Sarre près d'Ockfen et tout d'un coup, cette automotrice destinée à l'opérateur suisse Thurbo Bahn faisait un parcours d'essai. Et pour un peu, la photo n'aurait jamais pu être prise car j'avais oublié mon appareil photo dans le train! Heureusement, celui-ci revenait rapidement là où j'étais descendu et j'avais pu appeler un numéro de téléphone pour signaler la perte. Tout se termina donc bien et on peut vraiment parler de hasard et de chance!

Cette photo a été publiée l'époque dans la revue allemande Lok Report. 🙂

🇬🇧 On May 2, 2005, I was on the heights of the Saar near Ockfen and suddenly, that EMU built for the Swiss railway operator Thurbo Bahn appeared while on a test run. The photo could have been taken as I forget my camera on the train! Fortunately, it came back soon and I could contact by phone a service to report the loss. So everything ended well and we can really talk about chance and luck!

This photo was also published in the German periodic "Lok Report". 🙂

🇫🇷 L'autorail qui sillonne la petite ligne d'Andernach à Kaisersesch sort du tunnel sous le Löwenburg à Monreal et après une dernière grande courbe atteindra la gare où il marquera l'arrêt. Cette ligne est le dernier tronçon en exploitation de l'Eifelquerbahn qui reliait naguère Andernach à Gerolstein en traversant l'Eifel. Il y a des projets de réactivation de la ligne et s'ils deviennent réalité, cela offrira de nouvelles opportunités pour partir à la découverte de la région.

🇬🇧 Coming out the tunnel under the Löwenburg in Monreal, the DMU will after a last large curve arrive at the station. The line between Andernach and Kaisersesch ist the last operated part of the former "Eifelquerbahn" (Railway through the Eifel) that joined in the past Andernach and Gerolstein throughout the Eifel region. There are projects to reopen the whole line. If those become reality, it will offer new possibilities of travel to discover the region.
