The first day in #Spitzkoppe #Namibia, the highest point in the country. We did a bit of climbing to get a good #sunset.

Spitzkoppe Despite being in one of the hottest, driest climates around, pools of water leftover from rains form in the intricate Namibian landscape to provide a home for thousands of tadpoles (the black blob in the bottom left of the pool) #namibia #spitzkoppe
The stunning Spitzkoppe at sunrise After receiving historic amounts of rainfall, what would normally be bare dirt and rock was blanketed in endless fields of Stipagrostis uniplumis, or the Silky Bushman Grass #namibia #sunrise #spitzkoppe
Sensible people go out during the day Unfortunately, I’m a much bigger fan of the nighttime #spitzkoppe #namibia #astro #darksky #astronomy #milkyway #scorpius

The rock formations around the Spitzkoppe mountain also contain some special features: Like this natural rock arch.

The Spitzkoppe is part of a group of mountains with volcanic origin. Erosion has given those mountains interesting rounded shapes.

The reddish granite looks phenomenal in sunset or sunrise light.

(🧶 2/…) The „Dawn Of The Man“ Sequence was shot after all the other scenes were wrapped. The establishing landscape shots were actually still photographs shot by a second unit at #Spitzkoppe, #Namibia. Because Kubrick had a phobia of flying in airplanes, despite having a pilot’s license, he directed the second unit on what to capture via the telephone…!

#Namibia is a stunning place. Did you know that the unique landscape of #Spitzkoppe was used as a backdrop in #StanleyKubrick‘s 2001: A #SpaceOdyssey? (🧶)
