Have you been on a walk in your local park recently and noticed what looks like foamy spit in the grass? You may well have spotted a spittlebug! The one in these images is likely to be a Philaenus species.

The nymphs of these insects produce a foamy substance to help provide protection against the elements and predators. In the second image a nymph has crawled out of this cover and is just visible on the grass.
