Scientists Filmed a #Whale #Birth. The Surprise: Mom Had Many Helpers.
Involving a group of #spermwhales, adds to evidence that humans aren’t the only species that gets some form of assistance during and after delivery.
In #whales, it appears that baleen species are more solitary during birth and that the mother alone raises the calf to the surface to breathe. But for some toothed species, like sperm whales, birth is a collective experience.

Started working on a new mezzotint, my largest to date.

The roughening process took ages :D I started many months ago, not knowing at first what I would engrave on it, just doing one or two passes occasionally (I do 36 in total). But once I decided of a subject, I finished it in a few days.

So, it will be sleeping sperm whales. I think most of the result will depend on whether I succeed in rendering a uniform enough background, with light rays plunging from the top to the ocean depths. We'll see!

This remarkably life-like #sculpture is an #art installation by a Belgian art collective, created to raise awareness of the decline of #whales and the impact of climate change. According to a new study from Begus and his colleagues with Project #CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), the whales make sounds that resemble vowels, a key part of human language.
Although scientists already knew that #spermwhales communicate with codas — sequences of clicks analogous to #MorseCode — the study indicates a more complex communication system.

How #Scientists Are Using #Drones to Study #SpermWhales
A new tagging method called tap-and-go allows researchers to gather more data on the health and behavior of #whales, with less disruption.
Instead of dropping a tag from above, this #drone will press against the whale’s back to attach a specialized sensor. The tag’s suction cups will stick to the #whale’s skin, allowing the device to record audio of these #marinemammals communicating.
