I’ve seen a lot of posts lately about freelancers charging what they’re worth, people sharing rate advice and talking about pay scales, which is all great. But you know what I think would be even better? If you’re hiring a freelancer and think they’re undercharging, tell them. And then pay them a rate that actually reflects the value of the work. Yes, freelancers need the confidence to stand by their rates and charge properly for their time. But I also think, as an industry, we should be a bit more open about what “worth” actually looks like. Stop undercutting people, and if your first thought is “wow, they’re cheap”, maybe tell them so they can adjust their rates accordingly. It costs nothing to be a decent person, and hopefully over time that helps build a healthier standard for freelance rates across the industry. | 100 comments on LinkedIn
