U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz took it upon himself to paint over graffiti along the Southwest Freeway in Houston that was critical of Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who was shot and killed last week.

Sen. Ted Cruz paints over anti-Charlie Kirk graffiti along Houston highway

In a social media post Sunday, Cruz characterized his painting over the graffiti as “Erasing evil.” He's one of many elected officials in Texas to call out speech that is critical of Kirk, the conservative activist who was shot and killed last week in Utah.

An oft-used freeway exit on the east side of downtown Houston is expected to be closed through June as the Texas Department of Transportation completes drainage work as part of its long-term overhaul of Interstate 45.

Polk Street exit in downtown Houston closed through June for drainage work tied to I-45 project

The Texas Department of Transportation began construction work last fall on a multibillion-dollar initiative to expand and reroute I-45. The project is expected to take the better part of two decades to complete.

The ramp is part of a bigger six-year, $260 million highway project to update both freeways. The Southwest Freeway Interchange Project started in 2018, replacing many of the connectors between Interstate 69 and the 610 West Loop.
