Reviving California’s Paisley Underground (guitarist David Roback had been in Rain Parade), Mazzy Star came on like an unholy clash between Crazy Horse and the Velvet Underground (with Nico), slowing everything down to a snail’s crawl. Hope Sandoval’s cowboy waif persona brought a haunting charisma to “Fade into You,” “Wasted” and the band’s ultimate windblown dirge, “Into Dust.”
