I am really, really looking for different words to describe this mushroom autumn, but I end with the rather boring word “extreme” every time 🤷🏼‍♀️
In my 25+ years with mushroom hunting I have never experienced anything like 2025.

When the porcini (steinsopp) is as fresh as this I eat it raw. Just some sliced mushroom over my salad for lunch.

Btw, if I had sold all the boletus I have found this year, I would be a wealthy woman indeed.

Another dish with mushroom. I found some early bird Craterellus tubaeformis (traktkantarell), and made a soup a la Lotta Ekberg from her book on edible mushrooms.

Edited a couple of weeks later. This is probably Lepiota felina (svartskjellparasollsopp).

This might be Boletus reticulatus (bleklodden steinsopp), but I must admit I find it difficult to differentiate all the porcinis 🍄‍🟫

I found it in a park in Motala, Sweden, and there were lots and lots of them. Good looking too.

And they have arrived in abundance, Craterellus tubaeformis (traktkantarell). It is getting wetter, colder and darker, everything it likes.

Out cycling I spot Macrolepiota procera (stor parasollsopp) everywhere! They are easily spotted but so are all the other mushies, like all the porcini. So much food 🥘

I think it is at least five years since we have had such a great mushroom year here in the belt south-Norway-Sweden. I have great hopes for finding Craterellus cornucopioides (svart trumpetsopp) this autumn. What I do miss is Hydnum rufescens (piggsopp) - where is it?!

It looks like dried fish, but is dried porcini (steinsopp). It is a delicious snack, tasting somewhat like potato chips but with a little more body, and of course less salty.
I dried it in my oven overnight at 60 degrees centigrade, and wish I had made more.

Yesterday I probably found Leccinum variicolor (svartskrubb), but I also looked into L. melaneum (sotskrubb), a mushroom I have never met before. It grew with L. niveum (myrskrubb) and many other kinds of mushrooms.
I personally don’t eat Leccinum, even though it is considered a good mushroom, there are so many others to eat. Esp. this year.
