Spotify vs. AI: Official Verification Arrives for Human Artists

Spotify has announced a new verification system on Thursday, designed to help users immediately recognize real musicians versus content generated by artificial intelligence, at a time when streaming platforms are recording an unprecedented influx of synthetic tracks.

A Sign of Authenticity in the Age of AI

The Swedish giant will introduce the “Verified by Spotify” badge, identified by a green checkmark, on artists’ profiles and in search results, in the coming weeks. The mark will indicate that a profile has been reviewed and meets the platform’s authenticity standards.

Spotify has clarified that profiles primarily based on AI-generated music or characters will not be verified. “In the age of AI, it is more important than ever to be able to trust the authenticity of the music you listen to,” the company said.

Criteria for Verification

To access the badge, artists will need to demonstrate: consistent engagement with the public over time; adherence to platform rules; a genuine presence both within and outside Spotify, such as concerts, official merchandise, and linked social accounts.

According to the company, more than 99% of artists actively searched for by users will be verified at launch, a roster that includes hundreds of thousands of musicians, largely independent and from diverse genres and countries.

The Invasion of Synthetic Tracks

The initiative comes as the music industry is growing concerned about the proliferation of AI-generated content. The competing platform Deezer revealed last week that 44% of new music uploaded daily is made up of synthetic tracks.

The major record labels are also responding: Sony Music has stated that it has requested the removal of over 135,000 tracks produced with AI that imitated artists under contract, present on various streaming platforms.
